It is imperative that SMEs are able to equip themselves with the necessary technology to remain relevant in the present and competitive for the future.
There are several theories elaborating on the connection between information technology, economic development and social change, yet almost all theories agree on the importance of information and communication technology adoption in SMEs.
In the context of SMEs, technology facilitates the expansion of new markets, where companies can compete or act as a supply chain partner in a network that has already been designed by international conglomerates. To enable SMEs to widen their network and economic growth, a premium carrier neutral data centre and managed service provider like AIMS Data Centre Sdn Bhd play an important role.
AIMS (a subsidiary of Time dotcom Bhd) is Malaysia and South East Asia’s leading operator of premium carrier neutral data centre and managed service provider that provides international class data storage facilities and ancillary services, augmented by an unrivaled platform for interconnectivity.
A carrier neutral data centre provider is entirely independent of any network, hardware or software vendor because it has no affiliation to any one partner and can attract the widest range of connectivity providers into its facility.
Established in a pint sized 380 square feet computer room in Kuala Lumpur back in 1996, AIMS has grown from strength to strength to become Asia Communications Exchange the regions most interconnected site and is now home to all domestic carriers and more than 15 international carriers.
Its chief executive officer, Chiew Kok Hin said that AIMS reputation is built on reliability, flexibility, transparency and excellence in service delivery. This translates into AIMS providing its clientele a real choice of providers who are all competing to deliver the best performance, service and price for the applications and content.
“Data centre operators, in its simplest forms are focused on selling real estate, with a target market that is price sensitive. However, a niche group of data centre operators like ourselves have emerged and we are better known as carrier neutral data centres, better known as ‘tele-house’ or ‘carrier hotel’ and are specially focused in ensuring the presence of as many telecoms networks and as much interconnection between these telecoms networks as possible in their centres,” explained Chiew.
He also added that due to the focus on interconnectivity, carrier hotels tend to house hundreds of customers in a single geographic location, as opposed to the conventional data centre operators who may have large and multiple dispersed locations with fewer customers in each.
“While carrier hotels like us may not boast the large storage space that data centre operations whose business model is built on providing disaster recovery real estate storage facilities, we offer the value of a large pool of network connectivity, which are critical to telcos, ISPs, content service providers and the like. Over time, the users of carrier hotels form an inextricable community and become more sticky and less price sensitive, which accords carrier hotels the opportunity to procure higher gross margin levels,” said Chiew.
Chiew also said that it is essential for businesses, be it big or small to outsource as it is more efficient in terms of cost, manpower and energy. He remarked: “Data centres provide economies of scale in power of redundancy and cooling, two critical environmental elements for the storage of servers. Customers gain value as costs and complexities are minimised, operational efficiency is improved and risks associated with IT disruptions are reduced.”
The 37 year old added: “The same concept applies to SMEs, in fact I would say the smart move for every SME is to outsource their core and critical IT requirements as data centres are a market centre that gives them options to drive down their operations cost while at the same time improving the quality of their service. Over time, they would definitely reduce cost and complexity while seeing a healthy increase on the operational efficiency.”
Chiew was also quick to point out that although most SME owners are aware and open to the idea of outsourcing, there is still the need to educate SMEs on the cost effectiveness of outsourcing the IT and data needs as there are still a handful of SMEs which prefer having their own department rather than to outsource.
“With SMEs, I believe the age of education has passed as most SMEs are aware of the internet and its role in helping the success of businesses. Now is the period of implementation and using the facilities out there to their benefit,” advised Chiew.
AIMS is the first data centre in Malaysia and South East Asia to introduce and implement the Dynamic Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply System (DRUPS) a batteryless, fully green and environmentally friendly system that leverages on the stored kinetic energy of a spinning flywheel instead of the battery bank used by conventional uninterruptible power supply systems.
“Drups technology benefits our clients as it will give them better uptime, reliability and availability and it is already widely used in the semiconductor industry and wafer fabrication factories since it uses less power and is more efficient,” said Chiew, adding that AIMS plans to enter other Asian countries by the end of the year.
The cancer society developed a mobile application known as LUDIc, to successfully reach out to new audiences, to spread the awareness of breast cancer.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that technology can also be an amazing tool to improve the success rate of social initiatives.
In today’s digital world, technology empowers people in different ways by providing them with the tools required to earn a sustainable living, or make a difference in their community. Placed in the hands of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), technology can work as a powerful force, opening doors to incredible opportunities to extend NGO services to new communities and to change the lives of more individuals in need.
Many Malaysian NGOs still lack the resources to implement the projects to fulfil their missions. However, this is one example of an extraordinary NGO that managed to leverage technology successfully to achieve its objective of spreading awareness about cancer.
The NGO in question is the National Cancer Council of Malaysia (MAKNA). MAKNA recently developed a mobile application known as LUDIc, which is successfully reaching out to new audiences to spread the awaress of breast cancer.
The LUDIc mobile application basically combines informative video content about breast cancer and MAKNA services which is then streamed to end user masses using the streaming technology by local data center AIMS; and is now also available for download at the Apple App store at no cost.
Matheus Trevizoli Barrachi, Manager of MAKNA International Division shares that LUDIc is made up of 3 vital components, namely:
- The understanding breast cancer content and information that covers the anatomy of the breast, symptoms of breast cancer, progression, treatment and also prevention.
- Mobile Unit Screening Locator – for the public to locate MAKNA mobile mammogram unit that is on the road. The app allows women to set reminder to go for a mammogram or perform a breast self-examination.
- Tutorial on breast self-examination a step-by-step illustration of how to conduct a self-breast examination, as well as information for an easy breast cancer prevention routine.
The LUDic Journey
Matheus also shares how MAKNA came about developing LUDIc, running on AIMS Streaming Service.
“What started off as a sketch on a white board has now evolved into a potentially lifesaving application. Once MAKNA staff put down the idea on paper and had a direction on how we wanted to go about it, we had to consider how we could use technology viably to share the most with our users. The key challenge was that MAKNA is a charitable trust and we had to keep our budget in mind as the public funds we have are scarce, and highly accountable for.”
He said that once MAKNA narrowed down and finalised the app development and graphic design, the most important and toughest task came in which was the decision-making for the Video Streaming part of the mobile application.
“The video streaming portion was a major problem. Although we were very well prepared for video hosting and streaming to be the most costly of the entire project, we found out that because most companies charged by the amount (megabyte) streamed, it meant that in the foreseeable future, MAKNA would be faced with increasing charges every year!
He explains that as the LUDIc mobile application becomes more popular, the Streaming model offered by many data centers made it as such that MAKNA would be faced with increasing costs to keep the application running as more and more people view the LUDIc video section.
“At some point, we would have to start discouraging people to watch the videos, so as to maintain the cost down. This doesn’t make sense, and neither does the idea of MAKNA charging for the LUDIc app; it’s something that we definitely don’t wish to do!”
This is when MAKNA stumbled upon AIMS. This Malaysian data center offered the best specifications for the “video streaming” technology that the NGO was looking for, as well as extremely reasonable rates for hosting the LUDIc mobile application for mass public mobile phone-based viewing. An amicable arrangement was brokered with AIMS for reliable application hosting, video streaming technology, as well as future growth for LUDIc.
Ahmad Zahri Mirza, Vice President, Business Development, AIMS says, “AIMS is proud to be associated with an NGO, like MAKNA in their initiative to propagate wider awareness about breast cancer to the masses. Not only is the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility is somewhat achieved, it is also a testimony AIMS Streaming Service can be leveraged for non-commercial applications by society providers.”
Zahri continues that AIMS is helping non-profit organisations to realise the power of technology so that they can achieve their mission of helping humankind.
He further explains that AIMS is the first data centre in Malaysia that offers such value added services. Through AIMS, LUDIc could focus on their main objective to fight cancer, while AIMS covered everything from the infrastructure, hardware and technical expertise. Also, AIMS Streaming technology is highly scalable and flexible as it is a pay per use model that fits perfectly for a social cause, without draining them financially.
So far, MAKNA LUDIc mobile application has been downloaded in Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, The Philippines and Vietnam. AIMS has also helped LUDIc hosting versions of the videos in different languages to have further outreach of breast cancer awareness in different markets. Currently LUDIc has been developed in English, Chinese Mandarin and will soon be released in Malay and Tamil.
“We’ve always believed in the power of our company to improve the quality of our customers lives. This is a small way to repay back for all we’ve got,” concluded Zahri.
AIMS is first data centre in Malaysia to invest in environment-friendly UPS DRUPS used by wafer fabrication plants.
KUALA LUMPUR, February 21, 2013 – AIMS Group (“AIMS”) the country’s premier carrier-neutral data center, today announced that it is the first data centre in the country to invest and adopt the Dynamic Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS) by Piller Power Systems a German-based company.
Piller DRUPS is the world leading DRUPS supplier brand that is widely being used in large-scale data centres across various developed economies such as Australia, Korea, Europe and USA.
Today, DRUPS technology for UPS is already widely used in the semi-conductor industry and wafer fabrication factories, since it uses less power and is more efficient.
Being a battery-less UPS, DRUPS is a fully green and environmentally friendly Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system that leverages on the stored kinetic energy of a spinning flywheel instead of the battery bank used by conventional UPS systems.
According to AIMS Group CEO, Chiew Kok Hin, this is the first time that the data centre is investing in this technology by Piller DRUPS. “We expect that DRUPS technology will give our customers better uptime, reliability and availability.”
“AIMS key focus has always been on providing top-quality data centre hosting services and we always look for ways to exceed our customers satisfaction and expectations.
AIMS says that while the investment cost to adopt DRUPS exceeds the usual static UPS, the cost is justified, since it will augment AIMS credibility and reliability, while ensuring our customer data remains secure and available 24-7 at no additional cost.
“In 2013, AIMS will continue to move up the data centre value chain by driving managed services such as caching services, media streaming, security, content delivery on top of managed hosting and more,” said Chiew.
“We are also looking at moving into Disaster Recovery service in order to not only provide data centre space but to be the seat for Disaster Recovery Drills, and solutions for Business Process Outsourcing via strategic alliances and partnerships,” Chiew said, adding that AIMS currently owns 37,500 sq feet of data centre space in Malaysia, making it one of the largest carrier-neutral data centres in Malaysia.
About DRUPS Technology
DRUPS is a green technology that enables large data centres which require great amounts of mega watt UPS power to support UPS and mechanical loads such as Chillers and CRAH. Powered by batteries, traditional Static UPS needs to be operated in an Air Conditioned room whereas DRUPS can be operated in a Mechanical Ventilation Room.
Cooling availability is increased because of continuous UPS power backup to Chiller System. DRUPS also decreases operational costs as flywheel kinetic energy storage requires a more simple preventive maintenance as compared to the constant and scheduled monitoring that is required by traditional static UPS. The flywheel bearing will only require replacement every 8 to 10 years, compared to every 4 to 5 years for the traditional static UPS.
The flywheel kinetic energy storage minimises environmental wastage and over the long term will last longer than the traditional Static UPS. Its ability to support high step loads and its higher crest factor capabilities make it an ideal support system for large data centres. Its ability to handle leading power factor of latest server loads without derating makes it an important addition to AIMS data centres.

AIMS Complements its Managed Services Portfolio with Caching by AIMS
AIMS Group enriches its Managed Services Portfolio for Malaysian ISPs, helping them reduce up to 50% on international bandwidth costs via Caching by AIMS.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30, 2012 – AIMS Group (“AIMS”) the country leading carrier-neutral data center, today announced their expansion of its Managed Services portfolio that currently includes different levels of IT infrastructure and application hosting at the data center.
AIMS newest addition is a cloud-model based service known as Caching by AIMS.
According to Henry Chuah, Vice President, New Business, the new managed service is a timely and strategic effort to capitalize on the current surge of Internet traffic and demand primarily from online media usage, in the country.
“Currently we expect the Malaysian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to collectively spend about RM60 million in international bandwidth cost for the whole of 2012. But with the introduction of Caching by AIMS, this cost can be reduced by up to 50 %.
“In particular, AIMS ISP customers are seeing much bigger demands for faster connectivity, driven by the market increasingly ferocious appetite for more real-time news and updates, online gaming and retail applications, and streaming videos from both fixed and mobile customer end-points.”
He says that while this is a great opportunity for ISPs to monetize these demands, they are also facing significant technical and economic challenges related to the increasing streaming by their subscribers of their broadband which is now required.
Caching by AIMS – What Is It
ISPs are experiencing cuts into their profits in order to add on broadband resources to meet the quality demand of new media
However with this new AIMS managed service, they can resolve the issue by remaining cost-effective while at the same time delivering faster, providing more reliable access to video, music and social and news sites links to their subscribers.
Henry explains how “Caching by AIMS” works is by collating the number of content downloads could be a media file, YouTube video, torrents, movies and etc, from the Internet. Once the download reach a set number of hits, indicating its popularity, a copy of the mentioned data items are captured and stored at AIMS facility.
“Therefore, for future requests for the same content, the ISP can deliver very efficient service so that the end-users can experience even faster download as the content source is now virtually closer to them as it is being cached at the AIMS data centres located across the country, rather than on servers located overseas,” he says, adding that the subscription to Caching by AIMS will allow local ISPs to provide smooth, delay-free streaming to their subscribers.
Another added advantage is that AIMS cache servers do regular check on the cache contents, and those no longer needed are automatically deleted from the users servers this is part of AIMS automatic management process of the servers.
“AIMS is extremely particular about maintaining high standards of security when it comes to the safe keeping of subscribers confidential information. Nothing is compromised here,” shares Henry.
AIMS Group CEO, Chiew Kok Hin says, “By offering our own cloud-based flavour of services starting from our caching service, the robust AIMS data center proves that they are not only the pioneers but also the leaders in the space of co-location, storage, interconnectivity and managed services.”
“Although this service is newly introduced, we are very confident that it will soon see significant uptake by ISPs, content owners and advertisers when they see the huge revenue advantage that AIMS caching can bring to their business,” ends Chiew.
Malaysia Leading Carrier Neutral Data Center AIMS reinforces commitment to quality processes with Quality Management and Information Security Management systems certification;
AIMS Group succeeds dual ISO certifications in hopes of increasing revenue growth
KUALA LUMPUR, April 16, 2012- AIMS Group announced today that they have achieved two ISO certifications: ISO 9001: 2008 for Quality Management System and ISO 27001:2005 for Information Security Management Systems.
These internationally recognized certifications are awarded to organizations that has implemented and followed a comprehensive system that addresses all areas of an organizations operations.
CEO of AIMS Group, Mr. Chiew Kok Hin says, “With these certifications, it is a statement of assurance to our valued customers that the facilities and functionalities of our data centre is more than equipped to deliver quality, efficient management and stringent data security.”
“Both the achievements will further motivate AIMS to continue improving our processes. At present, we are pursuing for yet another certification; the ISO/IEC 20000.”
He further reiterated, “I am very pleased that we have achieved these certifications as we have always taken our responsibilities for securing sensitive information seriously, especially where customer data is concerned. We hope that in working to comply with the ISO standards will streamline processes and operations ensuring top notch quality services and solutions to our customers. In addition, we also hope that the certifications will also be viewed as an indication to a growth in revenue.”
These certifications exhibits AIMS commitment to lead by example, by continuing to comply with specific standards it demonstrates data integrity which is pertinent to AIMS, standing as the most densely populated carrier neutral data centre in the country.
According to SIRIM as of end of December 2009, at least 1,064,785 ISO 9001 certificates had been issued in 178 countries and economies while ISO/IEC 27001 certifications has reached almost 13,000 in 117 countries. With the ISO 27001 certification, AIMS Group has joined the ranks of 40 other companies in Malaysia as of mid-2011, that are ISO/IEC 27001 certified. Their certification is aligned with the government call for ISO/IEC 27001 certification primarily for critical information infrastructure.
KUALA LUMPUR, February 24, 2012 – AIMS Group (“AIMS”) the country premier carrier-neutral data center calls for local data center players to stay focused on the data center community Green Agenda.
This is in light of the increasingly challenging task for data centers to stay cost effective for their customers, whilst upgrade existing infrastructure in order to incorporate new technologies to stay competitive via the offering of more Cloud-based applications and services.
According to Chiew Kok Hin, CEO of AIMS, the Data Center Green Agenda is part of the IT sector overarching green initiative.
“Yet there are quite a number of factors to juggle simultaneously for data centers to stay green and remain competitive at the same time. Power (or electricity) bills, for example, make up the biggest cost, attributing almost 30 per cent of typical data center cost.”
“Besides the cost saving measures taken in the daily operations, higher power subsidies by the government can definitely help so that data center providers can focus their spending on leading-edge technologies such as Cloud delivery models of computing services.”
He says, “Although existing power subsidies are helpful, the local community of server co-location infrastructure providers, further government assistance can definitely help the collective local data center market work more efficiently towards achieving the Green Agenda.”
As it is, Malaysia is already a natural option for the building of data centers due to its abundant land resources, multi-lingual workforce, stable Internet connectivity and a geographical haven from natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons.
Chiew says, “In fact, PEMANDU has explicitly mentioned its objectives to promote Malaysia as a Regional Data Centre Hub by being the preferred destination for data center investors; and increase the supply of space in Malaysia from 0.5 million square feet to 5.0 million square feet by 2020 to capitalize on the strong growth of Data Centre revenues in Asia Pacific.”
AIMS Power Consumption Efforts
To this end, AIMS, as well as most data center providers, is already making continual efforts to reduce power consumption by these data center support systems such as:-
- Arranging data center server racks around to move cold and hot air more efficiently to reduce power bills and improve system efficiencies by up to 20% or more.
- Introduce virtualization technology so that lets one machine do the work of many (by cleverly assigning the servers resources to perform the same functions), to saving power and money while minimizing the environmental impact.
- Replacing the data center light source in data center with networked light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a more efficient source of semiconductor-powered lighting that also brings improved lighting quality.
“We need to think hard about IT power usage not just to reduce power consumption, but how to cope with we still have to cope with the Big Data explosion of data in this digital era. Organizations cannot spend unlimited money to host their data, applications and services at data center facilities,” ends Chiew.
The Group has been supporting the Good Samaritan Home since 2008; organizing at least two activities yearly; and helping to lift their financial burden
Kuala Lumpur, December 2, 2011 – Megawisra Group of Companies (MSB), comprising of Megawisra Sdn Bhd, AIMS Group of Companies (AIMS) and Global Transit Group of Companies (GT) has once again brought laughter to the children of the Good Samaritan Home (GSH). The recent event was held in conjunction with the Christmas celebration at Menara Aik Hua.
There were a total of 80 children, in which 40 of them were from the home. This time, the employees along their children to expose them to the spirit of giving and sharing with the less fortunate. The party was packed with interesting performances were magic show by a clown, face painting and a special lunch treat, besides the exchanging of Christmas gifts.
According to the CEO of AIMS, Chiew Kok Hin, “We take the onus in remembering and supporting the glimpse of society who are less fortunate. That is why this Group has even set up a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team, which demonstrates our commitment in giving.”
The Group has been particularly supportive of GSH over the years as it homes to more than 40 children, ranging from 3 months old to 17 years old. “It is this age range that the physical and emotional needs are at its climax. It is also this age that a child is shaped to be who they are in the future. Thankfully, the founder of GSH showered the children with utmost love and discipline. They emphasise good value and proper education, which is why 7 of the grown-ups are currently studying in universities.” says Chiew. [Lynn, none of them graduates yet, please rephrase this sentence if needed
Founded in January 1999 by Pastor Albert Ong and his wife, GSH cares for children from troubled families- whose parents have abandoned them, divorced, or having to lose either parent or both parents. The home seeks not only to provide for their physical and material needs, but also to minister to their emotional and psychological needs especially in the light of their broken family backgrounds.
“The GSH is a typical NGO which we get some funds from the government. Therefore, we still need external material and financial supporters like MSB, who has been providing schooling and basic essentials. My wife and I cared for the children without preference to any skin color, family background or even age.” says Mrs Ong, co-founder or Founder of GSH.
Mrs Ong further shared that the MSB has been very generous with the basic consumption contributions; and other essential donations like school uniforms, shoes and bags.
“The Group will continue to take the initiative and responsibility in giving light and hope to the needy, especially the children. It will be these children who will shape our nation one day; and seeing all 80 of them laughing and smiling is already a spark of hope- that’s a Christmas gift to the Company.” ends Chiew.
Malaysia premier carrier-neutral data centre continues its annual affair of leading by power-conservation example
KUALA LUMPUR, April 14th, 2011 – Megawisra Group of Companies (MSB) that comprises AIMS Group of Companies (AIMS) and Global Transit Group of Companies (GT), announces an increase in its power conservation by 30 percent during the recent Earth Hour 2011 Go Beyond the Hour drive on 26th March 2011, as compared to what was achieved during its similar Earth Hour participation in 2010.
A total of 137.45kWh power equivalent to have about 500 washing machines running simultaneously for an entire hour, was conserved; contributed mostly from the AIMS data center at Menara Aik Hua, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
According to Chief Executive Officer of AIMS, Chiew Kok Hin, last year MSB recorded savings of 109kWh of power and donated RM10 for every kWh saved to World Wildlife Fund, the organizers of Earth Hour. AIMS, the country’s only carrier-neutral data centre, has joined taken part in the global Earth Hour initiative since 2009 during which they managed to conserved 73kWh.
“AIMS is in a business whereby efficient power and energy management are core elements to sustain our 24x7x365 commitment to our clients.”
“Even as we (recently) added another building level to expand our immensely power-critical business of running data center facilities and equipment, we continue to take part in Earth Hour as it is an important testimony to being exemplary in being responsible to Mother Nature.”
Besides Earth Hour, AIMS makes it a point to implement as much green technology as possible to ensure continual usage of sustainable power in its data centers.
“Our facility is configured to be environmentally-friendly such as the use of very energy efficient lightings, extremely dense supplement cooling and cold aisle containment to ensure high efficiency coolly, nature-friendly fire suppression gas, as well as structured cabling system for space optimization and prevention of air blockages,” shares Chiew.
“This concept of integrating Earth-friendly elements is indeed becoming a crucial factor for AIMS to remain as the premier server farm and outsourcing host of choice in this region,” says Chiew, adding that the data center has attained the ISO 27001:2005 certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2010. The Information Security Management System of AIMS satisfies the rigorous independent audits, with the adequate and proportionate security controls to protect the data and servers for over 250 of its clients.
